November 15, 2003Crews close in on restoring all powerByRecord-Eagle staff writer TRAVERSE CITY - Blizzard conditions that swept through the region this week gave way Friday to sunny skies and warmer temperatures. But thousands of homes and businesses remained without power. Consumers Energy crews were expected to work into the weekend to restore power to about 4,000 customers near Traverse City, Cadillac, Gaylord, Honor and Manistee. "We're making some significant progress and most customers should be restored by midnight," company spokesman Timothy Pietryga said. "But some customers might not get power until Sunday." Wind speeds peaked at up to 80 mph in some areas, knocking down thousands of trees and damaging many power lines. Crews were able to make more headway Thursday night and Friday as winds began to die. "We'd get some lines up and others would be knocked down," Pietryga said. An estimated 5,000 Great Lakes Energy Customers in Kalkaska, Crawford, Antrim, Otsego, Charlevoix and Emmet counties were expected to have their power restored by Friday night or sometime over the weekend. Nearly 5,000 Cherryland Electric Cooperative customers throughout the region also were affected by Wednesday's storm. "We got everybody back this morning," Cherryland spokesman Pete Schimpke said. A Traverse City Light and Power spokesman said all of their customers were back on line Friday.
