Leelanau deems recall petition wording unclear

TRAVERSE CITY - Leelanau County has rejected the language in a petition to recall the Elmwood Township Board of Trustees.
County Clerk Michelle Crocker said the county found the recall petition language to be unclear.
"The way it's written sounds more like a conclusion," she said. "We're not looking at if it's accurate, but it has to be clear."
She said she expects the recall petition will be rewritten and submitted again.
Jim Ganter and Steve Van Zoeren filed the recall documents May 8. The men charge all seven board members with contempt for the rights of residents to participate in the township's future and its government.
The recall effort is the result of years of legal wrangling over development issues in the township.
Ganter and Van Zoeren could not be reached for comment Tuesday.
