Breath test first, dancing to follow

GRAYLING - Crawford AuSable prom attendees will be greeted with a preliminary breath test before they participate in their annual rite of spring.
The Crawford AuSable School Board voted 4-2 this week to allow sheriff's deputies to give students a breathalyzer test before they enter the prom April 12 at the Quality Inn Houghton Lake. High school administrators requested the measure because some students have attended school dances under the influence of alcohol, Superintendent Milli Haug said.
In February, some 20 students left a dance during the school's Spirit Week after sheriff's deputies gave two teens minor in possession citations. Administrators suspect those who left early may have been drinking as well.
School officials said they fear that students may drink and drive before and after the prom, which was moved to Houghton Lake this year. The event had been held at Camp Grayling's Officers Club in the past, but heightened security measures at the Camp prompted a change of venue.
Students are being informed of the breathalyzer check when they purchase their prom tickets, which went on sale this week.
"We want students to come to the prom, but we want them to know we won't tolerate their participation if they have been drinking," Haug said.
Giving breath tests is a practice at other districts, she said.
