March 22, 2003Photographer's images are part of horror flickByRecord-Eagle staff writer TRAVERSE CITY - Heidi Johnson knows that some people find her arresting photographs of the former Traverse City State Hospital "a little spooky." But she never could have dreamed that they'd actually become part of the set design for a supernatural thriller. "It's kind of neat, really," said the Traverse City photographer, whose images of the 19th-century asylum buildings were published in book form last year as "Angels in the Architecture." Johnson has signed an agreement allowing Warner Bros. to use several of her pictures in the suspense/horror film "Gothika," which stars Halle Berry, Penelope Cruz and Robert Downey, Jr. The film has been shot in Canada and is scheduled for release this fall. The story line of "Gothika" concerns a criminal psychologist, played by Berry, who wakes up to find herself a patient in the very same mental institution in which she works, accused of committing a murder but with no memory of having done the crime. Meanwhile, as she tries to regain her memory, a vengeful spirit seems to be using her to carry out its own evil purposes. Johnson said she was contacted in March by a set designer for the film, who'd seen some of her unearthly images of the former State Hospital while researching mental institutions.
