March 18, 2003Parking violators bewareDowntown employees taking spacesByRecord-Eagle staff writer TRAVERSE CITY - Parking scofflaws beware - the city will be coming after you with a bigger hammer this year. The city commission approved two ordinance changes Monday night targeting repeat parking violators. One allows the city to tow or immobilize vehicles with six or more unpaid parking tickets, while the second will increase parking fines to $75 for individuals incurring six or more parking tickets over a one-year period. The changes were recommended by the city's Downtown Development Authority because of complaints from downtown business owners upset with employees taking up metered parking spaces that are supposed to be for shoppers and visitors. In some cases city officials say violators are racking up numerous unpaid tickets, while in others they are paying the $5 parking fines instead of parking in areas that are designated for downtown workers. "Parking is extremely tight, which I think you all know," DDA executive director Bryan Crough said. The changes will be enforced citywide and are effective March 27. In other action, the commission accepted the report of the Local Officers Compensation Commission that will provide 1.5 percent salary increases for city commissioners for 2003 and 2004. The new annual salaries include $5,676 for the mayor's post, $4,541 for the deputy mayor and $4,086 for the other five commissioners.
