March 4, 2003Norah Jones makes point to include Interlochen in scheduleTickets will go on sale May 2, expected to go fastINTERLOCHEN - Norah Jones apparently had a good experience attending Interlochen Arts Camp in 1994 and 1995.
Interlochen Center for the Arts announced Monday that Jones, who won the awards jackpot during last week's Grammy ceremony, will perform in Kresge Auditorium July 9 as part of the Interlochen Summer Arts Festival. The 23-year-old jazz-pop vocalist won Grammys for Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year for her debut effort, "Come Away With Me." Her single, "Don't Know Why," was named Best Pop Vocal Performance and Record of the Year and three other awards including Best Song are credited to the album, too. "We knew there would be great interest in her appearance and wanted to let the public know as soon as everything was confirmed," said Interlochen Vice President Thom Paulson, who handles bookings of guest artists. Interlochen President Ed Downing said that Jones actually asked her management to inquire about a date to perform at Interlochen when they were planning a summer 2003 Midwest tour. Jones was an Interlochen summer jazz studies major in 1994 and jazz piano major in 1995. "What's really nice is that she wanted to come," Downing said. "She knew she was putting the tour together and she wanted to come to Interlochen and play for the students here and her Interlochen friends.
Tickets won't go on sale until May 2 and they'll no doubt go fast. An Interlochen press release includes a reminder that donors who make a tax-deductible donation of $300 or more to Interlochen before March 15 receive priority ticket processing ahead of the general public.
