Brian Manley, executive director of A.C. PAW, wrote to thank all the current volunteers for their stellar performance in helping animals in need and everyone responsible for the success of the sixth annual Pet Fair, held recently at the Grand Traverse County Civic Center.
A.C. PAW is in its eighth year of operation and has cared for and found new homes for nearly 2, 200 homeless, abandoned and abused cats, kittens, puppies and dogs.
Manley also wrote to thank Grand Traverse Animal Control, the County Health Department and the County Treasurer, who all volunteered time to provide an easily accessible, cost effective clinic for rabies shots and licensing.
"Five area vets also gave up their afternoon for this community service," Manley wrote. "They are Dr. David Burke and Dr. Albert Lynch of Traverse City, Dr. Dale Ackler of Mancelona, Dr. Tanja Molby of Suttons Bay, and Dr. Chris Bruning of Kingsley. And of course, the A.C. PAW volunteers who assisted, especially June McGrath, our Companion Animal Program director, who does so much behind the scenes work as well as up front. Finally, ... special thanks to Nancy and Jim Hardin, foster parents of Charlie, the blind Boston terrier who made his way to us at the Pet Fair."
Pet Fair proceeds totaled more than $2,000, after costs, and were donated to A.C. PAW for its rescue programs. For details, call A.C. PAW, (231) 587-0738.

The Mesick National Honor Society recently completed a fund-raiser for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
The hospital, founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, treats any child, regardless of ability to pay.
The NHS sponsored a Trivia Champions program to raise money for the children's hospital. Members were asked to complete a 300-question trivia packet. In addition to trying to gather the most pledges, the students competed to get the most correct answers.
Kelsey Hinkle had the most correct answers and Ashley Beckelic gathered the most pledges - $281.79. Brian DeYoung, who raised $125, also received a prize.
"... we were able to gather well over $2,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital," Mesick High School teacher and NHS adviser Christi Hulett wrote on behalf of the NHS students. "Once again, it was through the dedication of the entire community that we were able to make a difference ... We would like to express our gratitude to all those who support our causes."
