Workshop will discuss changing climate

Free program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 8
      TRAVERSE CITY - Scientists from the Great Lakes region will talk about the economic impact of a changing climate on winter recreation and tourism at a day-long workshop Nov. 8 at Crystal Mountain Resort in Thompsonville.
      Topics will include how a changing climate might affect the economics of winter tourism, how fluctuations in lake-effect snow could have an impact on snowmobiling in northern Michigan and the temperatures and other weather conditions necessary for ski resorts to make snow.
      • Peter Sousounis of Michigan State University is slated to talk about how climate change could affect the Great Lakes region.
      • Ken Kunkel of the Illinois State Water Survey will discuss possible effects on lake effect snowstorms and tourism.
      • Recreation expert Don Holecek of Michigan State University will talk about climate change and tourism.
      • Climate change and snowmobiling will be the subject of a talk by Bill Manson of the Michigan Snowmobiling Association.
      • Michael Call of Crystal Mountain Resort will talk about some of the ways his resort has responded to climate change.
      • Auden Schendler of Aspen Skiing Company will talk about approaches ski resorts can take.
      • Carol Potter of the Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau will look at community impacts from the point of view of a city that relies heavily on winter tourism.
      The free workshop will be presented by Michigan State, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Wildlife Federation and the Great Lakes Climate Change Assessment Team.
      It will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
