March 13, 2002Leland Twp. supervisor to resign- Board has 45 days to name someone to fill the remainder of Gary Bardenhagen's termBy STACEY SMITHRecord-Eagle staff writer LAKE LEELANAU - After more than 10 years as township supervisor, Gary Bardenhagen told the Leland Township board Monday night he would resign at the end of the month. Bardenhagen did not give a reason for his resignation, clerk Jane Keen said. Bardenhagen waited until the end of the meeting, in which the township dealt with financial issues because the end of the township's fiscal year is at the end of the month, then announced his resignation, Keen said. "Gary's a very private man. That's the way Gary is," she said. "He's just a very nice man who has done a lot of work in the township." Bardenhagen could not be reached Tuesday for comment. Bardenhagen, a Republican, was serving his third four-year term as township supervisor and had about two years to go. The township board has 45 days to name someone to fill the remainder of his term. In the 2000 election, he defeated challenger Steve Mikowski, a frequent critic of Bardenhagen and the township sewer system, by just 13 votes. The township's sewer system has been frequently in need of repair and in violation of Michigan Department of Environmental Quality standards for much of the time since it was built. Recently, Mikowski and other residents took Bardenhagen to task for allowing a township resident to cut two century-old cherry trees at the Provemont Pond Nature Area to use the lumber. Bardenhagen had said the trees in that area needed thinning and the two trees taken each had more than one trunk and woodpecker damage. The township board later voted to have the man sell the lumber and give the proceeds to the township. Bardenhagen also apologized to township residents for the incident. Bardenhagen runs a farm in the township. Stacey Smith is the reporter for Leelanau, Manistee and Benzie counties. She can be reached at (231) 933-1408, or at ssmith@record-eagle.com |
