June 28, 2002Woman who left dog in Jeep faces cruelty chargeTRAVERSE CITY - A Texas woman is facing a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge after her dog died after being left in her Jeep Saturday afternoon in a restaurant parking lot. Katherine Bondy, 22, of Kileen, is being charged with failing to provide adequate care for her pet. County Prosecutor Dennis LaBelle said the 5-year-old collie-retriever mix was left in Bondy's Jeep for about one hour while she was inside BD's Mongolian Barbeque restaurant near the Grand Traverse Mall. The dog was found dead at around 4 p.m., the prosecutor said. The woman told police that she left the vinyl windows in the Jeep partially unzipped while she was in the restaurant, although other witnesses said the vehicle was completely sealed. According to the National Weather Service, the high temperature in Traverse City on Saturday afternoon was 81 degrees with a humidity reading of 67 percent, creating a heat index of 84 degrees. Bondy, who authorities said is vacationing in the Interlochen area, faces up to 93 days in jail, a $1,000 fine and up to 200 hours of community service if convicted. No arraignment date has been scheduled. |
