January 18, 2002ObituariesMONROE - Lee R. Couturier (LeRoy D. Couturier), 73, of Monroe, passed away at his home on Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2002, following a 10 year battle with poor health.Lee was born in Lake Leelanau on Dec. 7, 1928, the son of Roy D. and Mazil (McNeeley) Couturier. Lee was a 1945 graduate of St. Mary's Catholic High School in Lake Leelanau. He also attended Michigan State University for two years. Lee then served his country in the U.S. Air Force as a private 1st class from Aug. 6, 1948 to Nov. 16, 1949. He married the former Emma L. Kolarik on Sept. 2, 1950, in Gills Pier. Lee was employed as a personnel manager for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan in Detroit for 35 years. While working in Detroit, Lee and his family lived in Westland. He retired in 1987, and moved to Cadillac. Lee moved to the Monroe area in November of 1998. Lee enjoyed genealogy and stamp collecting. He was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus #1266 in Monroe. Lee was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Monroe. Lee is survived by his wife of 51 years, Emma L. Couturier of Monroe; his three sons, Guy Douglas Couturier of Beaver Creek, Ohio, Dr. Jeffrey W. (Lori S.) Couturier of Newport and Neil T. Couturier of Chicago; his two daughters, Margaret "Peggy" Couturier of Azusa, Calif., and Debra L. (Richard) Lake of Canton; his two brothers, Richard J. (Jean) Couturier of Plymouth and Frederick J. (Lucy) Couturier of Traverse City; his two sisters, Helen (Harold) O'Brien of Empire and Betty (Edwin) Mucha of Cedar; and his 11 grandchildren. Lee was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Rosalind O'Brien. Friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Earle Little Funeral Home, Bacarella Chapel in Monroe. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at St. Charles Catholic Church in Newport, with Father William H. Tindall as celebrant. There will be visitation at the church at noon prior to the Mass. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association. Arrangements are being handled by the Earle Little Funeral Home, Bacarella Chapel, Inc. in Monroe. RAPID CITY - John David Kimball, 64, of Rapid City, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center. John was born on April 15, 1937, in Detroit, to Neil and Margaret (Stander) Kimball. John served in the U.S. Air Force and was proud to be a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces. John married Mary Longton on April 13, 1968, in Kewadin. John made his home in Rapid City since 1948, and was the owner of Clearwater Tool Company. John was also a member of the Rapid City Church of Christ. John is survived by his loving family including his wife of 33 years, Mary; his children, Yvonne (Phillip Jr.) Nault of Traverse City, John V. Kimball of Texas, Bryan Kimball of Mancelona, William Kimball of Texas, David J. (Brandy Zeeryp) Kimball of Kingsley and Daniel J. (Grace) Kimball of Rapid City; his father, Neil Kimball of Rapid City; and his 10 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at Wolfe Funeral Home, with Timothy Hall, Pastor of the Rapid City Church of Christ, officiating. Contributions in John's memory may be directed to either the Rapid City Church of Christ, or to the American Diabetes Foundation. Arrangements are being handled by the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. WILLIAMSBURG - Joseph G. Lucsy, 93, of Williamsburg, formerly of Saginaw, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center. Born Sept. 10, 1908 in Murray, Ohio, he was the son of Gabor and Theresa (Tallas) Lucsy. On June 19, 1937 in Saginaw, he married the former Alice Horn, who survives. Mr. Lucsy retired as a welder with the Iron Workers Union Local #25 which started in 1942. Other survivors include his three children, his son, John (Cynthia) Lucsy and his two daughters, Carol (Dale) Brown and Sue (Bernard, "Bud") Belanger; four grandchildren, Arlene, Bryan, Jason and Joel Lucsy; eight great-grandchildren; and his two sisters, Mary Bain and Thresa Smith. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Joseph G. Lucsy Jr. Visitation will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, and continuing Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rietz-Herzberg Funeral Home in Saginaw. Funeral service will be held Monday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. following the visitation at Rietz-Herzberg Funeral Home. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Saginaw. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging, 328 Washington Street, Traverse City, MI 49684. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. TRAVERSE CITY - Emil Clarke Niederer, 64, of Grawn, died unexpectedly Wednesday Jan. 16, 2002, at Munson Medical Center. Emil was born May 20, 1937, in Grayling, the son of Emil and Kathryn (Clarke) Niederer. Emil graduated from Grayling High School and then entered the U.S. Navy, serving from 1955 through 1959 as a medical corpsman in Washington, D.C. After his discharge from the service, he attended Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City and while there, was employed as the first EKG technician at Munson Medical Center, having been trained on the instrument during his military service. He then graduated from NMC and attended Michigan State University where he earned his teaching degree. Prior to his retirement, he taught science and health education, first at Central Junior High School, then at West Junior High School, and finally at East Junior High School. His teaching career spanned over 30 years with the Traverse City Area Public Schools. Emil was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Elk Rapids, and was previously a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Traverse City. He was very active in the Heart Walk and finished in the top of his group each year. Emil also worked as a server at practically all of the annual NMC barbeques. He was a model participant of the Vital Choice Exercise Program at Munson, enjoyed swimming, taking pottery classes, studying computer at NMC and enjoyed, as well as having studied, spiders. Emil was a life member of the Grayling Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. He really was a fantastic and dedicated father and husband. Emil is survived by his wife, the former Tish Vance, whom he married July 18, 1987, at St. Paul's Church in Elk Rapids; his children, Paul Niederer of Marquette, Heidi Niederer of Mt. Pleasant, the children's mother, Patti Coe of Grayling; his sister, Betsy (Don) Millikin of Grayling; many nieces, nephews and cousins; his step children, Mary E. (Mark) Dwight of Austin, Texas, Mark (Wendy) Sanders of Farmington Hills, Ken (Lisa) Sanders of Plymouth; eight step grandchildren; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Sam (Ginny) Vance of Rapid City, and Mary Martha (Chet) Danforth of Citrus Heights, Calif. Visitation will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, Jan. 19, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Elk Rapids, with the Rev. Catherine Woods Richardson officiating. Burial will take place in Elmwood Cemetery in Grayling in the spring. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, The American Heart Association, Michigan Affiliate, or to the American Diabetes Association. ONEKAMA - Lenore Garnet Wendel, 89, of Onekama, died on Tuesday at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility. Lenore was born on Feb. 20, 1912, in Onekama, the daughter of Edward and Lillian (Fisher) Persig. She worked as a secretary for many years in retail sales. Lenore is survived by her daughter, Margo Garfield of Itasca, Ill.; two granddaughters; three great-granddaughters; her sister-in-law, Ann Persig; and several nieces and nephews. Lenore was preceded in death by her father and mother; husbands, Al Garfield and Richard Wendel; sister, Pearl Childress; and infant sister, Agnes; and brothers, Clinton, Rollin and Claude. The family will meet with family and friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Edwards-Oak Grove Funeral Home in Bear Lake. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dr. Roger Sherwood officiating. Burial will be in the Onekama Village Cemetery. The Edwards-Oak Grove Funeral Home of Bear Lake is serving the family. JOSHUA NATHAN BURSIAN, 28, of Traverse City, and formerly of Chief Lake, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Munson Medical Center. LILLIAN GERALDINE KNITZ, 86, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at Birchwood Nursing Center in Traverse City. The family is being served by Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay. GRACE WILKERSON, 78, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2002, at her home in Mancelona. Arrangements are pending at the Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona. A complete obituary will follow. |
