Obituaries

DEXTER - Fred H. Lance, 75, of Dexter, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002.
      He was the son of Dewey and Lillian (Storck) Lance. He was the beloved husband of 53 years to Glenys V. (LeBar), whom he married on Oct. 23, 1948 in Hannah. The cherished father of Angela (Mike) Wynn and Lana (Paul) Ching all of Chelsea, and Alan Lance of Jackson.
      He was born in Wexford County on Sept. 25, 1926. He graduated from Buckley High School in 1945. He was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he proudly served his country in the Philippines and Japan from 1945 to 1947. He was honorably discharged as a first sergeant and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and Army Occupation Medal. He was a member of the Dexter American Legion.
      Mr. Lance retired from Chrysler Corp. as superintendent where he worked from 1950 to 1982. After retiring, he worked at the U of M. Golf Course, Travis Pointe Golf Course, and for the last 12 years at Barton Hills in Ann Arbor.
      In addition to his wife and children, Mr. Lance is survived by his seven grandchildren, who will miss his witty sense of humor and great stories, Heather and Stephanie Wynn, Lance and Leslie Ching, Tiffany, Melanie and Bryan Lance. He is also survived by one brother, Donald Lance of Kalkaska and sisters, Alberta (Don) Lynch of Traverse City, Leota (Stanley) Kiszlowski of Redford, Mary Brown and Josie Cogan both of Grand Rapids; a sister-in-law, Virginia (Ray) Woznick of Beulah, and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters.
      The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today, at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home, 901 North Main St., Chelsea.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at the Dexter United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William Donahue officiating. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the services.
      Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Humane Society of Huron Valley.
      His kindness and generosity will continue to touch us all forever. He was truly a wonderful man who will be greatly missed.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Benjamin Russell Boyd, 61, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at his home in Traverse City.
      Ben was born to the late Rev. William John Boyd and the late Sarah Boyd. He attended the Port Huron schools, graduating in 1958 from Port Huron High School, where he lettered in baseball and basketball. During his senior year, he led the basketball team in scoring and assists, received the team MVP award, and was named to the All-EML Team and Detroit News All-State 3rd Team. After graduating from Port Huron Junior College, where he played basketball, Ben attended Central Michigan University. There he received his bachelor's degree in education in 1964, and his master's degree in English in 1966. He taught English Literature courses at CMU from 1965 to 1971, when he was named "Professor of the Year."
      In 1964 and 1965 he won the college regionals in pocket billiards and, in 1965, finished second in the National Intercollegiate Pocket Billiards Tournament. He won many pocket billiards tournaments including the Michigan State Open Tournament in 1965. He also played in the U.S. Open Pocket Billiards Championship in 1968. Ben played exhibition matches with Willie Mosconi, Jimmy Caras and Rudolph "Minnesota Fats" Walderone.
      Ben took up tennis, won many area tournaments, and became the tennis professional at Sugar Loaf Resort from 1975 to 1978. Recently in August 2000, he entered the Robinson Tennis Tournament in Port Huron, and won the 55 and over Men's Singles title. He competed in the Traverse City YMCA Supersports Competition many times, winning the overall event in 1978 and 1979. In 1996, Ben was elected to the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame.
      For many years, Ben was a client services manager for Grand Traverse-Leelanau Community Mental Health Services, and more recently worked for A.T.S.
      Ben is survived by his brother, Paul (Nancy) Boyd of Colorado; his sister, Joanne (Kenneth) Maxon of Naples, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Jean Boyd of Port Huron and Toni Boyd of Shelbyville; and many nieces and nephews.
      Ben was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Worden; and his brothers, Raymer, Mansel, William "Bill", George, Donald and Carl Boyd.
      Relatives and friends of Ben are welcome to attend a memorial service to be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10, in the Traverse City Christian Church, 225 W. 14th St. (across from the Michigan State Police Post), Traverse City.
      Contributions in Ben's memory may be made to the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame; the AA Westside Group, 124 N. Division St., Traverse City, MI 49684; or to the charity of the donor's choice.
      Ben touched many lives and helped many people throughout his lifetime. His presence, kindness and sense of humor will be greatly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing the "Irish Prince."

      BALDWIN - Joseph B. Kuhlman Jr., 68, of Baldwin, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in Traverse City.
      Joe served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1950 to 1971, when he retired with 21 years of service.
      Joe leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife, Lois of Baldwin; his two sons, Ron (Linda) Kuhlman of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mark (Constance) Kuhlman of Traverse City; his son-in-law, Robert C. Hathaway (his daughter, Joette Louise Hathaway preceded him in death); his seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Kelly, Tony, Molly, Christopher, Sydney and Steven; one great-granddaughter, Katrin; his siblings, Shirley (Victor) Lichtenwald of Vassar, Richard (Arlene) Kuhlman of Florida, James (Connie) Kuhlman of Petoskey, and Karen (Wayne) Vermilyn of Onaway; his step mother, Helen Kuhlman of Harbor Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
      Visitation and funeral services will be held today, Feb. 3 at the Verdun Funeral Home in Baldwin. Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. when funeral services will be conducted with Pastor David Stiles officiating.
      Arrangements were entrusted to Verdun Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Baldwin.
     
      JOSHUA DEAN GREILICK, 25, of Traverse City, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, as the result of an automobile accident.
      Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, where a scripture service will be held at 7:30 p.m. followed by the praying of the rosary.
      A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Christ the King Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Duane Wachowiak serving as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Hannah Cemetery.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City.
     
      CHARLES E. LAPARR SR., age 66, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002, at Munson Medical Center.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 4, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the funeral home.

      ALICE O. SWIFT, 91, of Kearney Township, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday.

      SUTTONS BAY - Frances X. Shipstead, 80, of Suttons Bay, passed away Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at her home.
      Frances was born Oct. 16, 1921, in New York City, the daughter of Peter and Catherine (Kearney) Wright. She was united in marriage to Alton Martin Shipstead Sr., in August, 1943, at West Pointe, N.Y.
      Frances is survived by her three children, Susan Pelletier of Cary, Ill., Bud Shipstead of Traverse City, and Pat Shipstead of Coto de Caza, Calif.; and her seven grandchildren.
      Frances was preceded in death by her husband, Alton on March 10, 1990; and her two sisters, Marion and Catherine.
      Services will be announced at a later date. Burial will be in West Pointe, N.Y.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Grand Traverse Hospice.
