Ruth Elizabeth Gertz Died September 30, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Ruth Elizabeth Gertz, aged 96, of Elmwood Street, died Saturday. She passed away peacefully with family at her side. Born on Aug. 8, 1904, in Hammond, Ind., she was the daughter of James F. and Elizabeth (Stonebreaker) Bradford. She married Carl F. Gertz on Nov. 15, 1921. They shared 65 years together in marriage before he preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1987. Ruth was a charming lady with high morals, great style and a sense of humor. She was a loving mother to her three children and the dearly adored "Grandma Ruth" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She moved from Fox Lake, Ill., to Traverse City in 1949 with her husband, Carl. Ruth and Carl (a real estate broker) owned numerous lovely homes in the Grand Traverse area. Ruth had a flair for decorating and gardening and quickly turned each home into a showplace. In their retirement, Ruth and Carl enjoyed winters in Naples, Fla., attending cruises and yacht club activities with their friends and family. She is survived by her children, Jacqueline Jones of Traverse City, Richard F. Gertz of Traverse City, and Carylsue Kaiser of Grand Rapids; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, James, sister, Grace, and nieces of her beloved aunts. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home with The Rev. Fr. Paul Megge officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday beginning at 10 a.m. and until time of services. Althea Miller Huff Died September 30, 2000 CADILLAC - Althea Miller Huff, 99, of Cadillac, died Saturday afternoon at Lakeview Lutheran Manor. She was born Feb. 2, 1901, in South Boardman, the daughter of John Edwin and Ida (Lindsay) Miller. On Sept. 29, 1922, in South Boardman, she married Elmer Huff. He preceded her in death on July 27, 1967. Althea worked at the Fife Lake schools as a cook for eight years. She moved to the Cadillac area in 1969 from Fife Lake. Before that, she and her husband drove to Cadillac for Sunday services from Fife Lake. Althea had been a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints since her baptism in 1909 (over 90 years). She had been the church's womens leader in the past as well as a Sunday School teacher, Sunday School director, organist and music leader. Survivors include three sons, Doyle Elmer (Olive) Huff of Frankfort, Wayne Leroy Huff of Fife Lake, and John Roger Huff of Fife Lake; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Betty Huff of Fife Lake. Althea was also preceded in death by two brothers, Glen and Lee Miller; a great-grandson, Christopher Darrington; and an infant great-granddaughter. Visitation will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home; Bishop George Granger will officiate. Envelopes are available at Peterson Funeral Home. Gordon S. Larch Died September 30, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Gordon S. Larch, 88, of Traverse City, died Saturday at home. Born March 15, 1912, in Gros Cap, he was the son of Peter and Delina (Massey) Larch. On Dec. 15, 1933, in Hannah, he married the former Anna Manville. Gordon resided in Traverse City for the past 20 years, moving from Prudenville and Dearborn. He was a retired truck driver for Tucker Motor Freight in Dearborn. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Acme, Knights of Columbus, fourth degree and a member of the Traverse City Senior Citizen's Club. He enjoyed bowling, golfing, fishing, hunting, gardening, cribbage and spending time with his family. Survivors include is wife, Anna, of Traverse City; two daughters, Arleen Smith of Lincoln Park and Carol (Rex) Headapohl of Kalkaska; a sister, Rita Greaves of Caseville; two brothers, Pat Larch of Hazel Park and Leonard Larch of Roseburg, Ore.; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Violet, Marie, and Bernadette; and four brothers, Lawrence, Leo, Earl, and Roy. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes where a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Visitation will also take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ the King Catholic Church in Acme followed by a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 11 a.m.; the Rev. Memorial contributions may be directed to Mass intentions. flag Russell Aaron Alger Oldfield Soyring Died September 26, 2000 GWINN - Russell Aaron Alger Oldfield Soyring, 77, of Gwinn, Mich. and Carolina Shores, NC, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City after battling Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma for the past 13 months. Born Feb. 9, 1923, in Gwinn, Russ was the son of John Erick Soyring and Mary (Tapola) Soyring. He married the former Ann Marie Holappa of L'Anse, Mich. Russell served in the Civilian Conservation Corps prior to joining the U.S. Army and serving in Europe during World War II. After the war, he joined the Michigan State Police and was stationed in Romeo, L'Anse, Marquette, and Battle Creek, retiring in 1978. A member of King of Glory Lutheran Church in North Myrtle Beach, SC, Russ worked with the King's Carpenters and for Meals on Wheels. He belonged to the Masonic Order and the Shrine, and was in the Big Brothers and Sisters organization. Russ enjoyed working, traveling, being at "Breezy Lodge," and being with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Ann, of Gwinn, Mich. and Carolina Shores, NC; his sons, John (Lisa) of Austin, Texas and Russ (Tina) of Traverse City, Mich.; his daughter, Christine (Jerry) of Little River, SC; and a special exchange son "Duse" Luder (Rena) of Thun, Switzerland. In addition to many nieces and nephews, he is also survived by five grandchildren, Justin, Erich Ashley Charon of Little River, SC, and Chelsea and Aaron Soyring of Traverse City, Mich. He is also survived by his Welsh Terrier, Sisu. Russell was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, John, Ted, Ed, Hugo and Fred; and his sisters, Alma, Olga and Dagmar. A memorial service will be held at a later date at King of Glory Lutheran Church in North Myrtle Beach, SC; and a special celebration of Russ's life will be held at Breezy Lodge next summer. Mary Johnson Died September 30, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Mary Johnson, 89, of Traverse City, was called home to be with her Lord on Saturday at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born Feb. 14, 1911, in Scotland, she was the daughter of James and Margaret (Dalzial) Henderson. Mary married Marion Johnson in Jackson, he preceded her in death. She was a member of Bayview Wesleyan Church and the Senior Companion program. She was a former member of several square dance groups. Mom enjoyed crocheting, helping others and was known for her baking because she gave it all away. Born Nov. 18, 1913, in Milton Township, she was the daughter of Edd and Lena (Bussa) Bachi. On Oct. 29, 1937, in Detroit, she married Frank Larsen who survives. Helen retired from the Elk Rapids post office in 1975. Buell Died September 30, 2000 GRAYLING - Robert L. Buell, 72, of Grayling, died Saturday. Born March 27, 1928, in Lansing, he was the son of Ora and Dorothy (House) Buell. On Nov. 5, 1949, in East Lansing, he married Dolores Bush. Robert was a retired operating engineer who was a member of Local No. 324 for 52 years. He was an avid stock car driver, hunter and golfer. Survivors include his wife, Dolores; a daughter, Tina Marie Buell of Grand Ledge; two sons, Tim and Tom Buell - both of Grand Ledge; and three grandchildren, Chelsea, Cody, and Matthew. 'Bill' Greene Died October 2, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - William J. "Bill" Greene, born November 27, 1936, passed away Monday. Bill loved hunting, running, hockey, nature, tinkering and, most of all, his family. He was a lifelong track club member and played hockey in the Traverse City mens league most of his adult life. He coached, umpired and participated in various sports with his sons. He ran two Boston Marathons. He had a black belt in San Su Kung Fu. He served his county in the U.S. Marine Corps. Bill retired from Parker Motor Freight in 1999. He loved his computer. The squirrels and birds on 11th Street never were hungry because of Bill. Bill loved life. He will be greatly missed by his beloved wife, Geraldine (Lepisto) Greene; his sons, William John Greene and Robert Lee (Tammy) Greene; his brother, Sawyer Lee Greene; his brother- and sister-in-law, Bob and Lucy Lepisto; many close friends; and his adored grandchildren, Mathew, Amy, Meaghan, and Emma Lee. Bill had the biggest and most giving heart a person could ever hope for. His final gift was the gift of life. He donated so that others may live through him. Born May 8, 1948, in Grand Rapids, he was the son of Adolph and Catherine (Dickinson) Peplau. Max grew up in Butternut. He was in the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam Conflict. He worked 29 years at Frigidaire before retiring in 1995. Max was a nature and animal lover who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He loved his hunting dogs and bred special dogs for hunting. Survivors include his sons, Brandon Peplau of Traverse City and Rodney McGinnis; a daughter, Andrea Peplau of Traverse City; a brother, Jack Peplau of Crystal; and a sister, Sandra Kay Peplau. Max was preceded in death by his parents. Ashby Died September 19, 2000 SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Eva L. Ashby, 86, of San Antonio, passed away on Sept. 19, 2000, in Corpus Christi. She was born April 13, 1914, in Grant Township, Mich. She was formerly of Traverse City, Mich. Mrs. Ashby is preceded in death by her daughter, Nancy Jackson of Walsenburg, Colo. Mrs. Ashby is survived by one daughter, Linda (Bill) Douglas of San Antonio; three grandchildren, Brent (Lynnie) Schichtel of Odem, Nannette (Wade) Martin of Agua Dulce, and Bryan Schichtel of Leander,; five great-grandsons, Ryan and Nathan Schichtel of Odem, Matthew Martin of Agua Dulce, and Layne and Nicholas Schichtel of Leander; one brother, Orville (Alice) Russell of Greenville, Mich.; and one cousin, Carolyne Hennrick of Grand Rapids, Mich. Born Feb. 15, 1917, in Honor, he was the son of James C. and Willow (Robinson) Jerrett. On June 9, 1941, in Kingsley, he married the former Maxine Hooper. James served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a farmer and builder. He was a life member of the VFW Cherryland Post No. 2780, a charter member of Garland-Tompkins American Legion Post No. 399, a former member of Eagles and a former member of the American Military League. James enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards with friends. Survivors include his wife, Maxine; one daughter, Patricia L. (James) Steinebach; one son, Jeffery L. (Brenda) Jerrett; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Geraldine Ann Jerrett and a sister, Marjory L. Hoffman. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes under the auspices of VFW Cherryland Post No. 2780, where visitation will take place from 10 a.m. Thursday until the time of service. Elsie Rosalie Lundgren Died October 3, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Elsie Rosalie Lundgren, 75, of Traverse City, passed away surrounded in the arms and hearts of her three loving children at Munson Medical Center. Born May 15, 1925, in Richmond, Va., she was the daughter of Irwin Nathanial and Elsie Lorrine (Kersey) Wilcox. On June 7, 1946, at Fort Lee in Richmond, Va., she married Carl Lundgren. Elsie lived in Traverse City since 1988, moving from Cadillac. Carl and Elsie, owners of Lundgren Cleaners and Laundry in Cadillac, worked side by side from 1960 to 1972, when she retired and went to work for the Wexford County Council on Aging until 1988. Her greatest love was being a mother to her three children, six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Survivors include one sister, Katherine Wilcox of Richmond, Va.; three children, Carl Eric Lundgren, Jr. and his wife Chris of Anchorage, Alaska, Suzanne Decocq of Howell and Karen Kristine Van Dragt of Traverse City; six grandchildren, Eric and Perry Lundgren, Charlie Decator, Aimee Suzanne, Brady Robert and Courtney Quinn Van Dragt; one great-granddaughter, Kennedy Morgan Saylor; and two very special people in her heart, Paul Decocq and Bob Van Dragt. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Lundgren, in 1991. Cremation has taken place and a memorial will be planned in the spring. Interment will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery in Cadillac. Arrangements have been entrusted to Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. photo Shirley Yvonne (Curtis) Stickles Died September 22, 2000 INTERLOCHEN - Shirley Yvonne (Curtis) Stickles, 75, of Interlochen died Friday at her home. On May 13, 1925, Shirley was born to her parent, Elsie (Kiebel) Curtis and Howard Curtis Sr. in Detroit. She was the first daughter, followed by her sister, Norma Jean, and two brothers, Howard Jr. and Melvin. Shirley completed her schooling in 1943. She was married to Arthur R. Stickles on March 16, 1946. Their daughter Janet Ruth was born Dec. 18, 1946. Shirley was a member of the Interlochen Womens Club and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. She loved her blue-eyed cat, Frank Sinatra, and all other animals. She was an avid bird feeder and bird watcher. Her working career as an accountant was spent at Ethyl Corporation in Ferndale, Mich., where she retired in 1980. She wintered every year in Florida and called herself a Snowbird. She also loved spending time in her condo inside Disney World. Shirley never tired of "Mickey" and his friends. She was fond of spending her summers in the Interlochen area. She loved shopping and browsing in antique and gift shops. Her fondest memories as a child were spending the summers at her Uncle Bill's farm on Walloon Lake with her sister and all of the aunts and uncles. The happiest period in Shirley's life was in 1946 when she married, set up a home and became a mother. She loved the outdoors...camping, boating, water skiing and the fall color tours. She was very good at finding four-leaf clovers in clover patches and a real expert at finding Petoskey stones along the beach of Lake Michigan. At 11:45 p.m. September 22, 2000, Shirley took her journey to be with the Lord. She will be missed by her family. Survivors include her husband; daughter, Janet Hills of White Lake and Branson, Mo.; grandsons, Jimmy Hills of Indianapolis and Joseph Hills of White Lake, Mich.; and two great-grandchildren. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents. Services were held at Mount Hope Lutheran Church in Sterling Heights on Sunday, Oct. 1. Bates, 85, of Benson, formerly of Lake Ann, Mich., died Wednesday at Benson Hospital in Benson, Ariz. Born March 20, 1915, in Almira Township, Mich., he was the son of Henry and Edna (Wade) Bates. Cecil was employed by the Traverse City State Hospital for 25 years, retiring in 1977 and later moved to Arizona. He was a member of Benson Heights Baptist Church and the Benson Senior Center. He married Lois Jane Carter on May 31, 1947, in Bryant, Ohio. They spent most of their 53 years of marriage in Michigan where they raised their eight daughters. They are Rosemary (Bill) Knapp of Petoskey, LaVerne (Dick) Buffenbarger of Traverse City, Linda A. Gardner of Petoskey, Judy (Jerry) Krussell of Petoskey, Pat (Bud) Bowen of Traverse City, Micki (Al) Williams of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Tammy Sue Flum and Connie (John) Cannon of Petoskey. They in turn were blessed with 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. During his lifetime, Peter was a crew chief in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After the war, he became a heavy equipment operating engineer. He worked on road construction for 41 years with Johnson and Green Co., and then H&D Inc. of Petoskey, retiring in 1987. Peter was a bowler on the Jolly League for a number of years. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, and a 4th degree Knight, a life member of the American Legion and the VFW, as well as a member of St. Francis Xavier Church. Besides his immediate family, he is survived by his brother, Carl (Elva) Flum; two sisters, Lota (Glen) Soper and Libby Pratt; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Chalmea; a sister, Rachel Durgan; a grandson, Jeffery Hankins; and a son-in-law, Daniel Gardner. On Oct. 3, 2000, he went home to his Lord. Born in Eaton Rapids on Aug. 16, 1922, the youngest of four children parented by Frank T. and Eva M. (Foote) Miller, Paul graduated from Eaton Rapids Schools in 1940. He went on to receive a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State College (MSU) in 1944, and he established a successful veterinary practice, Miller Animal Clinic, which still cares for animals in the Lansing area. Paul and Hazel moved to Williamsburg in 1989. "Doc" was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and a man who will be remembered for his smile, which surrounded his family like a warm embrace. He was the embodiment of open-handed, open-hearted friendship, a loving and gentle person who cherished the beauty of the earth and whose life was a true passage of honor and dignity. He taught his children and grandchildren that they were capable of anything, and he stood behind them like a solid wall of knowledge and kindness. "Doc" was an avid sportsman, a man who had good dogs, good friends, and was a wizard with a fly rod. He loved the outdoors, and it is there that he will be remembered by his friends and family. Above all else, "Doc" Miller was a good man, who through his love, left his family prepared for life. Gil was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Charles and Mildred Boise Connell, and brothers, Wilfred and Glen. Gil was born Aug, 11, 1926, on a modest farm in Alexandria, South Dakota, homesteaded by his grandfather Charles. He graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY and served as an Ensign in the Naval Reserves. Gil was a licensed professional engineer and worked as a consultant for Giffels Associates, Inc. in Southfield. He specialized in electrical power plants, including coal, gas, oil, nuclear and fossilized fuel generators. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Gil was always active in church work, particularly in the area of social action and church choirs. He was an avid musician and played numerous instruments, and particularly enjoyed singing with the Cherry Capital Chorus and other barbershop groups. Gil also enjoyed community theater and performed in numerous plays over the years, including Northport's Sesquicentennial Play in 1999. Gil was a member of Trinity Church in Northport, Lions Club International, Grand Traverse Lighthouse Foundation, Grand Traverse Genealogy Society, Friendship Force International, Habitat for Humanity, Northport Pilots Association and Gertrude L. McDuck Benevolent Society. Since his retirement Gil and Theda have enjoyed extensive travel, as well as hosting numerous international visitors through Friendship Force. Velma Rosemond Ricketts Died October 8, 2000 KALKASKA - On October 8, 2000, Velma Rosemond Ricketts, 73, left this earth to be with the Lord. Born January 18, 1927, in McMinnville, Tennessee, she was the daughter of Arthur and Leona Craddock. When she was very young, her family moved to the Detroit area. This is where she met and married Robert "Bob" Ricketts. While raising her family was her top priority, Velma still found time to enjoy the simple things in life, She attended Temple Baptist Church in Detroit, was a Girl Scout leader and she loved to sew and made many of her own clothes. Velma enjoyed camping trips with her family, listening to music, puzzles, crafts and tending to her "money-tree" plants. Eventually, she and Bob retired to the Kalkaska area. Besides enjoying her time with Bob, Velma volunteered at the Kalkaska Historical Museum and attended Calvary Baptist Church. Those who knew her loved Velma for her caring, generous ways and happy outlook on life. This beautiful, wonderful woman will be greatly missed by all. On Feb. 22, 1941, in Manistee, he married the former Margaret Kozlowski. Formerly of Traverse City and Manistee, Bill and Margaret also wintered in Gulf Shores, Ala. Bill served in the U.S. Army. He was employed at Consumers Energy of Traverse City, retiring after 26 years. Bill was a member of Holy Rosary Parish in Cedar. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and landscaping at his retirement home on Lime Lake. Survivors include his wife, Margaret; three sons, William C. Born July 23, 1909, in Honor, he was the son of Ralph A. and Cora (Mund) Mead. On Oct. 28, 1933, in Bendon, he married the former Maude I. Clow. A self-employed carpenter, Chet and his family were pioneers of the Benzie County area. He graduated from high school in Honor and was a lifelong resident of Honor. Chet served as chairman of The Building Committee for The Maples, a medical care facility, in Frankfort. He also owned his own building business, worked for the DNR in the fire service, and was supervisor for Homestead Township which he then also served as county commissioner. Chet was a charter member of The Lions Club in Honor. Lucille Sprague Died October 7, 2000 MESICK - Lucille Sprague of Mesick died Saturday at Lakeview Lutheran Manor in Cadillac. She was 89. She was born on Sept. 4, 1911, in Marilla, Mich., to Albert and Della (Humes) Joseph. She had lived all of her life in the Mesick/Cadillac area and had graduated from Mesick High School and went on to Central Michigan University and graduated from there with a teaching degree. She was a member of the Mesick United Methodist Church and had served as Sunday School teacher, organist, choir member and board member. Mrs. Sprague had also served on the Mesick school board. She and her husband founded the Orrin A. Sprague Agency, Inc. and she continued to work until just two weeks ago. She married Orrin A. Sprague on June 10, 1944, in Grand Rapids, Mich., and he preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 1985. Mrs. Sprague is survived by two sons, Fred (Sharon) Sprague and Al (Donna) Sprague - both of Cadillac; six grandchildren, Laurel Sprague, Heather Sprague, Jon Sprague, Kim McLain, Courtenay Sprague, and Blake Austin; five great-grandchildren, Chioke, Holly, Sam, Jana, and Brendan; and four sisters, Grace Kohn of Mesick, Ruth Dennison of Houston, Texas, Vera (Archie) MacPhee of Harrietta, and Verne Solarick of Apple Valley, Calif. Sshe was preceded in death by her husband; a grandson, John Austin in 1986; two sisters, Wretha Brastrom and Lois Brastrom; and a brother, Harry Joseph. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Mesick United Methodist Church with the Rev. J. David Thompson officiating. Born Jan. 30, 1924, in Traverse City, he was the son of Ernest N. and Blanche L. (Milks) Garretson. On June 20, 1953, in Kalamazoo, he married the former Beverly R. Ghastin Riley. Dick was very proud to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was formerly employed by Parsons Manufacturing in Traverse City and retired from Parker-Hannifin Corp. in Otsego. Dick was a member of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Reserve, the Otsego Elks Club in Otsego, a member at large of the VFW and a member of the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed deer hunting and the outdoors. He will be remembered for the way he loved his family and his kind and gentle manner. Survivors include his wife, Beverly R. She was also a volunteer at Title IV Indian Education Act in Port Huron for 15 years. Sr., died Friday at her daughter's home in Chicago, Ill. Carmella Leo was born to Frank and Mary (Scaccianoce) Leo on January 24, 1921, and grew up in Chicago, graduating from Austin High School in 1939. She married Nello Valentine on July 30, 1939, and they had four children. She led a fruitful and energetic life with many accomplishments, including being a co-owner of a beauty salon and operating a service station with her husband, both in Chicago. She worked at a nursing home and even drove a milk truck for Metamore Dairy near Chicago during the drivers' strike of 1937. She took pride in her work and forever told stories of her adventures and triumphs. In 1982, Carmella and Nello moved to Maple City to join their son on his farm where she enjoyed many walks through the countryside. She left the farm in May of this year when she moved back to her hometown of Chicago to live with her daughter. She will be missed by her family and friends, both young and old. The young will especially miss her counter full of sweet treats. Carmella was preceded in death by her husband, Nello, and her brothers, Willie and Clement Leo. She is survived by her beloved daughters, Marietta (Howard) Alton of Rogers, Ark., Cherie Valentine of Chicago, Ill., and Va'Nessa Valentine-Nixon (Art Nixon) of Dallas, Texas; her devoted son, Nello R. Valentine Jr. (Sue Bullock) of Maple City; her adoring grandsons, Nello R. (Geri) Valentine III of Lansing and Rifino Valentine of New York, N.Y.; cherished sister, Frances Loverher; and dear brothers, Joseph, Edward, and Frank Leo. Wanda Louise Aardema Died October 15, 2000 KALKASKA - Wanda Louise Aardema, 68, of Kalkaska, died Sunday at home surrounded by her family following an extended illness. Born May 9, 1932, in Greenup County, Ky., she was the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (McDowell) Payton. On Dec. 27, 1950, she married Allen Aardema, who survives. Wanda was a retired banker. She opened the Northwestern Savings and Loan Association branch in Kalkaska and retired as vice president in 1993. She was the assistant cashier of the Bellaire State Bank prior to that. Wanda was actively involved in her community as well. She was elected as a school board member of the Central Lake Public Schools, Central Lake Township supervisor, and to the Kalkaska County board of commissioners. She was politically active. Wanda was appointed by then Gov. Blanchard to serve on the State Mental Health Advisory Council. Wanda served on the EDC/IDC in Kalkaska and Central Lake. She was a real estate broker and a certified assessor. Wanda was active in the Kalkaska Kiwanis Club and was past worthy matron in the Order of the Eastern Stars. Wanda was a people person. She loved working with the public and especially her "senior" friends. Wanda also took in troubled teens to her home, helping raise 12 young ladies in addition to her own children. Wanda will be sadly missed by her husband and children, Randall (Patricia) Aardema of Richland, Nancy (William) Edginton of Traverse City, Kim (William) Ruble of Carlisle, Ohio and Tammi (Edward) Rodgers of Traverse City; seven grandchildren who were the light of her life, Joseph and Ben Aardema, Nicole Edginton, Kaci and Randy Roach and Maggie and Eddie Rodgers. Also surviving are two sisters, Martha Watson and Nancy Oliverious; one brother, Bud Payton; sisters-in-law, Trudy Aardema and Marguerite Emerick; as well as many very special nieces and nephews. In his youth he was very athletic and enjoyed playing sports. In later years he enjoyed hunting, fishing and loved morel mushroom hunting. Clarice was employed as a registered nurse at the Traverse City Psychiatric Hospital and Munson Medical Center from 1933 to 1974. She enjoyed gardening, yard work, needlecrafts and cards. White, 75, of Frankfort, formerly of Arcadia, died Monday morning. Ben was born on Feb. 13, 1925, in Kalamazoo, the son of Arthur and Jennie (Cannegaiter) White. Ben had been a resident of Arcadia for the past 29 years, moving recently to Frankfort. Prior to this Ben had lived in Kalamazoo, where he was the owner and operator of the South Westnedge Garage from 1948 to 1967, the Kalamazoo Implement Co. from 1966 to 1971 and the Ben-Burt Car Wash from 1964 to 1975. Ben was a member of the Blaine Christian Church where he served as Elder and former chairman of the board. He was a former member of the Lion's Club of Arcadia and Kalamazoo Lodge No. 513 F&AM. Ben also served as the former supervisor of Arcadia Township. He served his country honorably during World War II in the European Theater with the U.S. Army. On April 26, 1944, in Kalamazoo, he married Lola Owen, who survives. Ben is also survived by his children, James (Janice) White of Kalamazoo, Janice (Thomas) Tannehill of Traverse City, Jay (Jody) White of Frankfort and Joy White of Las Vegas. An experimental engineer, Charles retired from General Motors Milford Proving Grounds Truck and Bus. He resided in Howell most of his life but lived in Fife Lake for 15 years. Neitzel passed away at Eastlake Nursing Center in Elkhart on Monday. She was born in Traverse City, Mich., on Oct. 24, 1913. Minetta was a widow and she liked people. She was always willing to help someone out. She lived in California for many years and operated a small restaurant. Minetta was known as a great cook. She loved the northern Michigan area and always thought of it as home and visited frequently. Minetta loved animals and especially cats, she always had at least one. She was a loved mom and grandma and will be missed by all. Minetta is survived by a son, Kenneth (Barbara) Linderleaf of Traverse City; two daughters, Miriam Zmudzinski of Elkhart, and Lois Crawford of Bakersfield, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Born Oct. 26, 1956, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Charles J. and Marilyn M. (Morrison) Flaska. She lived in Leelanau County for most of her life. A graduate of Glen Lake High School, Laurie received her accounting degree from Cameron University in Lawton, Okla. She served as CEO for Leelanau-Redi Mix, her family's business, to which she was very devoted. Laurie was a member of Lake Ann United Methodist Church. She enjoyed boating - especially cruising, traveling and line dancing. A music lover who favored country western songs, Laurie treasured her grand piano. She cherished her family, her flowers and her home. A friend to all, Laurie loved people and had kept in contact with many whom she had grown up with. She was married on Sept. 2, 2000, to her wonderful loving husband, Charles, who survives. Tomes, 89, of Kalkaska, formerly of Fife Lake, died Monday. Born Feb. 14, 1911, in Grosse Pointe, she was the daughter of James and Emelie (LaBeau) Couture. On Feb. 20, 1926, in Detroit, she married Thomas Edward Tomes, who preceded her in death in 1981. Agnes sewed for the Packard Motor Company in Detroit for ten years. She was later employed at Bob Leland Manufacturing in Detroit for 10 years. She moved from Detroit to Fife Lake in 1968 and then to Kalkaska two years ago. She is survived by two daughters, Edna Wheeler and Lillian (Jerry) Birgy - both of Fife Lake; a son, John (Freda) Tomes of Inverness, Fla.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley, where the family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Born Jan. 29, 1977, in Ironwood, he was the son of Bob and Judy Gould of Traverse City. Colin attended Traverse City Senior High School, where he was a member of the soccer team and an avid skier. He also attended Northwestern Michigan College and was currently a senior at Western Michigan University in the Lee Honors College studying biological science. He had been inducted into several honorary societies, including Phi Beta Kappa, Mortarboard, and the Golden Key. His passion was environmental research and he had spent the past summer at the University of Michigan Biological Station in Pellston. Colin loved the outdoors and northern Michigan woods. He spent his free time hiking, camping, biking and canoeing. Known as CJ to his friends, his quiet, unassuming, gentle manner will be missed by all who knew him. "Tony" Ruskowski, Sr., of Traverse City, died Wednesday at home after a two and a half year battle with cancer. Born Nov. 16, 1927, in Detroit, he was the son of the late Anthony Charles "Charlie" and Anna Ruskowski. He married Celine Lukasiewicz on Jan. 16, 1954. They made their home in Detroit for 20 years and then retired to Mesick for 26 years. They recently moved to Traverse City. Tony spent 25 years with the Detroit Police Department and retired as a detective sergeant of the First Precinct in downtown Detroit. He was a member of the Retired Detroit Police Officer Association, the Detroit Police Lieutenants and Sergeants Association, the Snowbirds and the 772nd Combat Military Police Association. He was also a veteran of the 101st Airborn Division during World War II and the 772nd Combat Military Police Unit during the Korean War. Tony loved northern Michigan and enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a past member of the Central Lake Masonic Lodge No. 426 as well as the Odd Fellows. On Dec. 31, 1929, in Alba, he married Dora Kirby, who preceded him in death in 1996. Also preceding him in death were his brother, Carroll; two sisters, Gladys Burnett and Mary Flickinger; two grandsons, Jim and Dale Scott; and his parents. Mr. Helton was the owner and president of Gas Compression Services, a nationally known corporation with facilities throughout Texas, Louisiana, Kansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Michigan. He was born in Muldoon, Texas. After graduating from Flatonia High School, Jim joined the Marines where he served in Vietnam and later became the crew chief on "Marine One," the White House helicopter, during President Johnson's administration. Following his tour of duty, he entered the gas and oil business. After a short time, he founded his company continuing to expand for 22 years, employing over 300 people. Mr. Helton recently sold his company to Universal Compression, Inc., retiring to Schulenburg and his beloved ranch in Weimar. Jim was a man of many talents; a consummate businessman, a superior provider for his loved ones, a tough Marine, a steady, almost unbeatable, golfer, a "real life" cowboy, and last but not least, a disciplined leader, who will be dearly missed by his family and the friends to whom he was so hospitable. He was born October 17, 1913, in Flint, the son of the late Tony and Valeria Ruskowski, and attended the Flint schools. Joe served in the U.S. Army during World War II from November 13, 1942, until December 17, 1945, in the Pacific Theater and the Philippines. He married Margerite Maxwell in Flint in the summer of 1948. She preceded him in death. Joe had been employed as a purchasing Supervisor for AC Sparkplug in Flint for 42 years until his retirement in 1978. He also taught for two years at the General Motors Institute. Joe moved to Alberta in 1984 where has lived since. Joe was a member of the Polish Legion of America, U.S.A., Post #8, and B.P.O. Elks Lodge #222, both of Flint, and the A.A.R.P. His passion was golf, having continued to play until just a year ago. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Dale Climie of Frankfort; four grandchildren, Andrea Gesner, Anette Lemke, Sandy Peterson, and Joseph A. A former resident of Saginaw and Port Richey, Fla., Josephine had lived in Traverse City for the past 12 years. A beautician, she had worked for some of the best beauty shops in Saginaw and later owned her own shop. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and gardening. Josephine cherished her family and loved spending time with them. She was the "Best mom ever!" She also enjoyed playing tennis with her husband until they were both in their 80s. Survivors include her husband, Robert Gnatkowski of Traverse City; two children, James Gnatkowski of Roscommon and Joanie Tarras of Traverse City; five grandchildren, Ryan, Tara, and Rory Gnatkowski and Kevin and Kyle Tarras; and two sisters, Helen Van Steenkiste of Saginaw and Elizabeth Hahn of St. Charles. Josephine was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Sarah, Annie and Mary. Private family services will be held at a later date. LaFreniere, 80, of Traverse City, died peacefully at home Monday, October 23, 2000, after a short illness under the care of Munson Hospice and her loving niece, Bunny Johnson, and sister Lois. She was born September 23, 1920, at the family home in Traverse City, the daughter of Earl and Emma (Wheelock) Carmien. After attending County Normal and Central Michigan University, she taught school at Summit City and East Bay in Traverse City. She worked as a social worker until her marriage to Mark Norton in 1946. He preceded her in death in 1958. At that time she returned to college at CMU, earning a Masters Degree in Education. She taught at Pullen Elementary School in Mt. Pleasant until 1961, when she married Joseph (Louie) LaFreniere and moved to Midland. She then taught at Cook Elementary School until her retirement in 1981, when she returned to Traverse City. Her husband Louie preceded her in death January 6, 1999. She had been active in MaMeNeSewong Garden Club, Retired Teacher's, and Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the church circle. She was a former member of Long Lake Friends Church in Traverse City and Trinity Lutheran Church in Midland. She will be very sadly missed by her daughters and sons-in law, Sue (Norton) and Chuck Smith of Manistee, and Sally (Norton) and Dr. David Dehnke of Vancouver, WA. Peter enjoyed model trains, working with computers and electronics. He was an avid Star Trek fan. Kay was one of the initial founders of the Grand Traverse Bay YMCA, member of the Board of Directors and "Band Lady" for the National Cherry Festival for 18 years, member and advocate for Traverse City Cental High School Music Patrons and Athletic Booster Club, and Office Manager for Dr. Edward Stokes for 25 years. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and brother, and by her husband of 45 years, Austin J. Van Stratt, who died in 1992. She is survived by her sons, Russ, his wife, Lucy, and his family in Florida, and Jim, his wife, Jill, and his family in Traverse City. She was very proud of her four wonderful grandsons, Jason, Zachary, Mac, and Nick, who, in turn, adored their Grandma and Grandpa enormously. No visitation or funeral is planned upon her request. Wartinbee, 75, of Torch Lake, Central Lake Township, formerly of Ann Arbor and El Cajon, Calif., passed away peacefully Friday in Ann Arbor. Mr. Wartinbee was the son of the late F.D. and Isabelle M. Wartinbee of Clintonville, Wis. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Marjorie "Jo," and his siblings, Cupie, Donald, Betty Martini and Jane Schlice. Surviving are his four sisters, Mary "Midge" Haase, Ellen Mae (Ed) Giroux, Effie Ehrmann and Roberta "Bobbie" Tradewell, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his four loving children, Linda W. Harvey of Chesapeake, Va., Samuel C. Jr. (Linda) of Fruitland Park, Fla., Robert D. (Christina) of Glendale, Calif., and Betsy M. (Jeff) Waldrop of Ann Arbor, and eight grandchildren, Joshua (Sherri) Porter, Jessica Porter, Travis and Shelby Concon, Steven and Denisa Wartinbee, and Benjamin and Jacob Waldrop. Following his service in the Korean Conflict, Sam earned his degree at the University of Michigan College of Engineering, graduating with the class of 1950. He was a lifelong member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. During these years he met "Jo," and they married in 1954. He was invited into the partnership of McNamee, Porter and Seeley, an engineering firm in Ann Arbor, where he dedicated his life's work as a civil engineer. Prior to retirement and moving to Torch Lake in 1983, Sam provided for and raised his family. Sam served his community as a member of Kiwanis Club, and as a Deacon at the First Congregational Church. During his career he served as president of both the Michigan Society and the National Society of Professional Engineers, as well as, a founding member, and later chairman of Professional Engineers in Private Practice. In May of this year Sam was presented the 50-Year Emeritus Award by the U of M Alumni Association. Following retirement, Sam enjoyed his lifelong love of Torch Lake in northern Michigan. Gardening, canning, fishing, hunting, golf, family and friends filled his time over the years until he dedicated his every moment to the care of his wife, "Jo," following her stroke in 1998. A month after Jo's death on October 20, 1999, Sam was diagnosed with lung cancer and began his battle against the disease that claimed his life. Sam Wartinbee was a good man, an honorable man. He was a strong-willed, intelligent man, with a sharp mind right to the end. Godspeed, Sam Wartinbee. You are loved and missed. Comfort 'Uncle Sammy' Died October 22, 2000 ALDEN - Samuel Comfort, 84, of Alden, died Sunday morning in his home on Torch Lake. Sam was a retired mechanical engineer. Born Jan. 1, 1916, in Webster Groves, Mo., he was the son of Clarence Ransom and Dorothy (Baxter) Comfort. Sam was the youngest of six children; three brothers, Ransom, Hartley and Sim; and two sisters, Viola and Sarah, who preceded him in death. Sam attended Westminster College in Fulton, Mo. and received a bachelor degrees in mathematics and mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan in 1939. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity in Ann Arbor. In 1939 he began his career with the Buda Motor Works in Harvey, Ill. Buda became Allis Chalmers, where Sam was chief engineer and manager of development engineering at the lift truck plant. He held nine U.S. patents and three Canadian patents. He retired to Alden in 1972, where his family had vacationed since 1923. Sam was active in every community where he lived. He served as an institutional representative for the Boy Scouts of America, while he also served on the Board of Deacons and treasurer of the Community Church in Flossmoor, Ill. He founded an interdenominational church on Long Key, Fla. that has grown and prospered for 17 years. He has been a lifelong member of the Alden Methodist Church and the Alden Tennis Club. Neighboring children have always been a major part of his life in Alden. He taught countless numbers of kids water skiing, sailing and games (kick-the-can) and took them on adventures to the "firetower," the "meteor," or the "canon." Kids of all ages called him "Uncle Sammy" and were a big part of keeping him young. Tennis and sailing were his hobbies, but bridge was his passion. In 1943 he married Violet "Vi" Fontechia (Mrs. Paul Patchen, who survives), mother of his son, Thomas M. Comfort. In 1975 he married Gayle Kelly Lumry of Minneapolis, Minn., who preceded him in death in 1997. In 1998 he married Jane Leatherman of Caledonia, who survives him. Additional survivors include his immediate family, son, Thomas, daughter-in-law, Margaret and grandson, Robert, of Bellaire; and his extended family, Rufus (Pat) Lumry of Seattle, Wash., Ann (Lumry) and Bosa Hedlund of St. Paul, Minn., Steve (Shirley) Lumry of Seattle, Wash., Ken (Jan) Leatherman of Caledonia, Judy (Leatherman) and Ken Ritz of Wayland; as well as their many children and grandchildren. Hershberger, 65, of Williamsburg, died Sunday at her home. Mrs. Hershberger had been a lifelong resident of Kalkaska County. She was a devoted wife, mother, gramma and homemaker. She was a successful business woman, and owned and operated Advent-Age Products of Williamsburg for the past 20 years. Lydia was born in Kalkaska County on May 24, 1935, to Cecil and Catherine Dinges Bailey. On Dec. 5, 1953, in Kalkaska County, she married Duane Hershberger, who survives. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Michael (Kim) Hershberger and Mitchell (Nanette) Hershberger - both of Kalkaska; four daughters, Gail (Gary) Macomber of Beaverton, Gaye Hershberger of Williamsburg, Wendi Hudson of Kalkaska and Jodi (Gary) Crandall of Clarkston; one brother, Gordon Bailey of Owosso; two sisters, Loretta Burgett of Kansas City, Mo. and Laura Huffman of Hesperia; and 16 grandchildren. Born May 25, 1926, in New Castle, Ind., he was the son of Jules "Sarge" and Mary (Weisse) Rohdy. On Aug. 21, 1948, in Traverse City, he married the former Betty Akey. George served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. From 1946 to 1957 he worked in parts manufacturing in Traverse City. He then moved to Dowagiac to work as an electrician for Consolidated Die Cast from 1957 to 1964. In 1964 to 1988 he was employed with Sunstrand Heat Transfer, retiring in 1988. George was a post commander and life member of the VFW Post No. 1855 of Dowagiac and a boyscout leader in both Dowagiac and Traverse City. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golfing. On Aug. 2, 1946, she married her second husband, Dr. Keith James Long, who preceded her in death in February 1988. Formerly of Munster, Ind., Margaret lived in the Traverse City area since 1974. She was a member of The Presbyterian Church, Munson Medical Center Women's Auxiliary and the Traverse City Ladies Book Club. Margaret enjoyed collecting figurines, painting, needlework and crafts. Wartinbee, 75, of Torch Lake, Central Lake Township, formerly of Ann Arbor and El Cajon, Calif., passed away peacefully Friday in Ann Arbor. Mr. Wartinbee was the son of the late F.D. and Isabelle M. Wartinbee of Clintonville, Wis. He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Marjorie "Jo," and his siblings, Cupie, Donald, Betty Martini and Jane Schlice. Surviving are his four sisters, Mary "Midge" Haase, Ellen Mae (Ed) Giroux, Effie Ehrmann and Roberta "Bobbie" Tradewell, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his four loving children, Linda W. Harvey of Chesapeake, Va., Samuel C. Jr. (Linda) of Fruitland Park, Fla., Robert D. (Christina) of Glendale, Calif., and Betsy M. (Jeff) Waldrop of Ann Arbor, and eight grandchildren, Joshua (Sherri) Porter, Jessica Porter, Travis and Shelby Concon, Steven and Denisa Wartinbee, and Benjamin and Jacob Waldrop. Following his service in the Korean Conflict, Sam earned his degree at the University of Michigan College of Engineering, graduating with the class of 1950. He was a lifelong member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. During these years he met "Jo," and they married in 1954. He was invited into the partnership of McNamee, Porter and Seeley, an engineering firm in Ann Arbor, where he dedicated his life's work as a civil engineer. Prior to retirement and moving to Torch Lake in 1983, Sam provided for and raised his family. Sam served his community as a member of Kiwanis Club, and as a Deacon at the First Congregational Church. During his career he served as president of both the Michigan Society and the National Society of Professional Engineers, as well as, a founding member, and later chairman of Professional Engineers in Private Practice. In May of this year Sam was presented the 50-Year Emeritus Award by the U of M Alumni Association. Following retirement, Sam enjoyed his lifelong love of Torch Lake in northern Michigan. Gardening, canning, fishing, hunting, golf, family and friends filled his time over the years until he dedicated his every moment to the care of his wife, "Jo," following her stroke in 1998. A month after Jo's death on October 20, 1999, Sam was diagnosed with lung cancer and began his battle against the disease that claimed his life. Sam Wartinbee was a good man, an honorable man. He was a strong-willed, intelligent man, with a sharp mind right to the end. Godspeed, Sam Wartinbee. You are loved and missed. Donald Richard "Dick" Weber Died October 24, 2000 GAYLORD - Donald Richard "Dick" Weber, 47, of Gaylord, died Tuesday. Dick was born June 9, 1953, in Calgary, Alberta, along with his identical twin brother, William. Dick met his wife, Sharon, at Chateau Lake Louise. They wed in 1981 after a four year courtship. Dick grew up in Toronto and attended Richmond Hill High School. He began his hockey career at the age of three and played Junior A hockey. He earned hockey scholarships at prestigious Cornell University of the Ivy League in Ithaca, NY. During his hockey career at Cornell, he earned the Joe DeLibro Award exemplifying his sportsmanship. Dick earned a degree in hotel management and graduated from Cornell in 1976. He was also offered a tryout with the LA Kings. Dick learned of a position as general manager opening at Hidden Valley Resort in Gaylord through the Cornell Alumni Services. He investigated Gaylord and the position at Hidden Valley and saw it as a wonderful opportunity. Dick and his family moved to Gaylord in 1985. He was instrumental in major improvements to the Hidden Valley Resort and Otsego Ski Club. Dick moved on after seven years at Hidden Valley to Marsh Ridge Resort in Gaylord. There, early on, he became the first president of the Gaylord Area Tourism and Convention Bureau. He was well suited as a leader in roles such as that of spearheading the Gaylord Golf Mecca. Early after becoming general manager at Marsh Ridge was when Dick first started acting on his personal dream to someday have ownership roles in hotels. In partnership with Daune Weiss, owner of Gaylord's Holiday Inn, they had owned several hotels throughout Michigan including Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Lansing and Greenville. Other accomplishments and achievements include Dick having a kingpin role establishing the Otsego County Sportsplex, which opened in 1996. He was also a gifted musician who could entertain friends for hours on the plane. Dick gave back to the community with his Rotary Club involvement. He is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughter, Jennifer; a son, William; his twin brother, William (Charleen DeLong); mother, Margaret Weber; Sharon's brother, Paul (Karyn) Espey; and Sharon's parents Al and Shirley Espey. He is also survived by two nephews, Graham and Samuel. Daune Marie (Langestaff) Weiss Died October 24, 2000 GAYLORD - Daune Weiss, 53, Gaylord community leader and owner of the Gaylord Holiday Inn, died Tuesdy, Oct. 24, in Gaylord. Daune was born July 29, 1947, in Newberry. A graduate of Northern Michigan University, she taught English and sociology in St. Ignace and Rudyard schools. She served on the development boards on both Northern Michigan University and Lake Superior State University and was nominated earlier this year to fill the next vacant position on Lake Superior State's board of trustees. She was recently elected to the North Country Bank board of directors. Daune moved to Gaylord in 1985 and became owner of the Holiday Inn. An active civic leader, she has been involved in numerous organizations and last July received the coveted Buergermeister award, an honor given to the "Citizen of the Year" by the Gaylord Herald Times. She was also selected Alpenfest parade marshal in 1995. Among her other awards is the Northern Michigan University Alumni Service Award, American Association of University Women (Gaylord chapter) Women Making History Award, Gaylord/Otsego County Chamber of Commerce Athena Award and Gaylord Kiwanis Club Citizen of the Year. During her 15 years in Gaylord she was active in the Gaylord/Otsego County Chamber of Commerce, Gaylord Area Convention and Tourism Bureau, West Michigan Tourist Association past president and board member, Otsego County United Way board of directors, Alpenfest Honors Luncheon Committee chairperson, Gaylord Rotary Club, Gaylord Downtown Development Authority board of directors and founder and president of the Gaylord Wish Tree Foundation, an annual activity that has provided gifts for hundreds of needy children at Christmas time each year. She also hosted Wertz Warriors snowmobilers annually, an event that raises money for the Special Olympics. She is survived by three sons, Christopher (Sarah), of Boulder, Colo., Peter of East Lansing and Andrew, a student at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie; and a grandson, Jacoby. Adley Amy Cosgrove Died October 29, 2000 OLD MISSION PENINSULA - Adley Amy Cosgrove of Old Mission Peninsula and Zephyrhills, Fla., passed away Sunday at Tender Care Nursing Home in Traverse City. Born Aug. 12, 1907, in Ironwood, Mich., she was the daughter of Richard and Emma (Lee) Morin. She married John K. Cosgrove of Traverse City in June 1926. She was a past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, member of the Ladies Shrine Ciro Court in Zephyrhills, the Mapleton Womens Club and Ogdensburg United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband; one grandson, James D. Cosgrove Jr.; and five brothers, Oliver, Kenneth, Everett, and John Morin, and George Craft Jr. She is survived by two sons, John K. (Elly) Cosgrove and James D. (Kathleen) Cosgrove; a daughter, Shirley (William) Miller of Traverse City; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City where visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. The Rev. Gilbreath, 98, of Traverse City, formerly of Chicago and Detroit, died Sunday. Born, Sept. 2, 1902, in New York City, N.Y., he was the son of William Sydnor and Wilhelmenia (Schaff) Gilbreath. In 1937 John married Louise A. Johnson in Crown Point, Ind., who preceded him in death in 1984. He worked as an accountant for Price-Waterhouse and Ford Motor Company for many years before retiring in 1965. John lived an inquisitive life. He was an avid reader and loved music. Survivors include two sons, Stephen (Lauran) Gilbreath of Northport and John S. "Jack" (Karen) Gilbreath Jr. of Ann Arbor, and a daughter, Susan (Lee) Lane of Oostburg, Wis., formerly of Evanston, Ill. "Jan" Derenzy, 60, of Kearney Township, died Sunday at home. Jan was born May 25, 1940, in Cedar Springs, the daughter of George and Sylvia (Bruce) Nowak. She moved to Bellaire from Cedar Springs in 1960. She attended Ferris State University and worked for the Bellaire Pharmacy and the Central Lake Pharmacy for many years as a pharmacy technician, assisting people and making friends. She was a past member of the Bellaire Lioness Club and enjoyed sports, especially golf, bowling, softball and football. She was instrumental in founding the Shaun Patrick Davies Sports Complex in Bellaire, named for her deceased son. She will be loved and missed by her many friends and family. Surviving are one son, Bryan M. (Christine) Davies of Bellaire; two brothers, Michael (Jan) Nowak of Roscommon and Len (Ann) Nowak of Virginia; two grandchildren, Christopher J. and Delaney J. Davies of Bellaire; five nieces and nephews; and her many granny children. Harriett DuBois Died October 29, 2000 FRANKFORT - Harriett DuBois, 74, of Frankfort, died Sunday at her home. Harriett was born on August 14, 1926, on her grandparents' farm in Curtisville, Mich., the daughter of George Henry and Grace (Bell) Edwards. Harriett had been a resident of Frankfort since 1976, moving from Royal Oak. She was the former owner of the DuBois Insurance Agency, The Paper Clip, and Frankfort Laundromat - all in Frankfort. Harriett was civic-minded, working as election inspector and serving on the zoning board of appeals for the city of Frankfort. She served on the loan committee of the Frankfort Credit Union and was a volunteer transporter for the Family Independence Agency. Harriett was a former member of Crystal Down Country Club and the Frankfort Golf Club. On December 18, 1965, in Royal Oak, Mich., she married Ronald DuBois who preceded her in death on June 3, 1985. Harriett is survived by her aunt Arbutus (Robert) Milholin of Curtisville; nieces, Sandra Milholin of Britton, Mary Ann Martin of Alverado, Texas, Martha Milholin of Pontiac, and Ruth Versnick of Britton; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. Born March 13, 1926, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the daughter of Judge Clarence and Mary (Buddeke) Spraul. She married Dr. Donald J. Frank in Cincinnati. Patricia was very active in a variety of civic and charitable endeavors including serving on the Board of Directors for her alma mater, the College of Mount Saint Joseph, and as committee member for the Leland County Club and the Leland Community Center Old Art Building. "She considered her children and grandchildren to be her most important life's work and all of us feel extremely fortunate to have been blessed with her unwavering love and devotion, " said son Tom. Hazel had been a resident of Alden for 62 years. She loved planting trees and flowers and enjoyed yardwork. Born Oct. 13, 1933, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Sherman I. and Viola M. (Duell) Pickard. On Feb. 26, 1955, she married James P. Helton of Flint. She spent her years as a homemaker in the Flint area and moved to the Mayfield area in 1987. She was a member and officer of the Spark Plug City Citizens Band Radio Club in Flint which raised funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Survivors include three daughters, Janet Pennell of Mayfield, Susan (Thomas) Abshier of Pennsylvania, and Jayne Jacot of Columbiaville Mich.; two sons, Ricky Helton Sr. of Burton, Mich., and Paul Helton of Flushing, Mich.; one brother, Macks D. Doris Mae Radtke Died October 29, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Doris Mae Radtke, 81, a resident of Traverse City all her adult life, died Sunday. Born Jan. 31, 1919, in Dexter, she was the daughter of Fred M. and May E. (Bolt) Covert. On March 24, 1937, in Dexter, she married Norman Radtke. Doris worked at Munson Medical Center in central supply for 51 years. She loved raking leaves and cooking. Survivors include eight children, Mae (Larry) Smith of Traverse City, Harold (Betty) Radtke of Fresno, Texas, Marvin (Barb) Radtke of Traverse City, Karl Radtke of Traverse City, Loren (Mary) Radtke of Fresno, Texas, Raymond (Marsha) Radtke of Newberg, Ore., Larry Radtke of Traverse City, and Walter Radtke of Traverse City; a brother, Fred Covert of Holliday, Fla.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Simmons Died October 29, 2000 TRAVERSE CITY - Phyllis L. Simmons, 82, of Traverse City, died Sunday in Traverse City. She was born May 20, 1918, in Henrietta, Mich., the daughter of Paul and Genevieve (Spoor) Meyers. In 1944, she married her beloved Elbert "Al" Simmons in Warren, Mich. Phyllis was active in the Church of the Living God in Warren and her life was full of travel with her husband. They traveled all around the world, including spending 16 winters in Hawaii. She attended Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Traverse City. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed volunteer work and spending time with her family. She is survived by her devoted sisters, Rachel M. (Bob Sr.) Franke and Marion (Norm) Grueber, both of Traverse City; a stepdaughter, Bea Pouliot of Tennessee; stepgrandchildren, David (Cathy) Pouliot of Harrison Township, Chris (Pouliot) Alwardt of St. Clair Shores, and Todd (Lisa) Pouliot of Detroit; her aunts, Carrie (Bob) Parker and Jean Spoor - both of Traverse City, and Midge Thompson of Cass City; a sister-in-law, Jean Meyers of Onalaska, Wis.; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Myrna Ford; and brothers, Arthur and Hank Meyers.
