February 29, 2000Petoskey boys, Harbor Springs girls take titlesHARBOR SPRINGS - Glen Lake's Peter Fisher was the individual star Monday, but Petoskey had too much depth. As a result, the Northmen captured the Class B-C-D boys' state ski title at Nub's Nub, doubling the score on second-place Glen Lake. Petoskey finished with 50 points and Glen Lake 100. Manistee placed third with 107 points and Suttons Bay fourth with 150. Harbor Springs, with one senior in the lineup, captured the girls' race with 61 points. Petoskey was second with 91. Petoskey, which won the boys' title in 1998, put four skiers in the top 11 in the giant slalom and four in the top 14 in the slalom to claim the victory. Jacob Olsen, Matt Behan and Jay Leigl led the Northmen. In the giant slalom, Olsen was third, Behan fourth and Leigl fifth. In the slalom, Leigl was third, Olsen fourth and Behan sixth. "Anytime you can put three skiers in the top 10 you're usually in pretty good shape," Petoskey coach Brewster McVicker said. "Those guys really stepped it up. It was real pleasing to me to see them ski up to their ability. They were pretty focused." Nick McIntosh added the exclamation point, taking 11th in the giant slalom and 14th in the slalom. "He sealed the deal," McVicker said. Petoskey led b y 34 points after the morning giant slalom race. "It was a nice, low stress day on the coach," McVicker said. Fisher won both events. He edged Manistee's Tom Robison 1:05.67 to 1:05.93 in the slalom. He was clocked in 48.74 in the giant slalom. Iron Mountain's Alex Lundy was second in 49.59. Fisher trailed Robison after the first run in the slalom and he was tied with Olsen after the first run of the giant slalom. "Peter Fisher is a fantastic athlete," McVicker said. "He's a great ski racer, and he showed a lot of class (Monday). He paced himself in his first runs, then poured it on in the second runs." Matt Wiesen added a pair of top 10 finishes for Glen Lake. He was sixth in the giant slalom and 10th in the slalom. Robison finished eighth in the giant slalom for Manistee while teammate Sean Totch was seventh in the giant slalom and ninth in the slalom. Nick Stanek led Suttons Bay, taking eighth in the slalom and 10th in the giant slalom. Like the Petoskey boys, the Harbor Springs girls had too much balance for the rest of the field, putting three skiers in the top 10 in both events. Pacing the Rams were Alicia Grambeau, Kara Stenback, Stephanie Baker and Genevieve and Evelyn Wise. Grambeau was second, Genevieve Wise eighth, Stenback ninth and Baker 14th in the slalom. Grambeau was second, Stenback seventh, Baker eighth and Evelyn Wise 12th in the giant slalom. Petoskey was paced by Heidi Hofstetter, who was third in the giant slalom and fifth in the slalom. "Harbor Springs is a level above us," McVicker said. "It would have taken a Harbor Springs fade for us to win it." Boyne City's Andrea Gerling won the slalom in 1:06.68. She was fifth in the giant slalom. Glen Lake's Lauren Teed won the giant slalom in 51.45. She was 10th in the slalom. Boyne City finished fourth and St. Francis fifth.
