      George A. Sanders
      Died February 4, 1999
SUTTONS BAY - He arrived in the Suttons Bay area in the early 1940s with only $40. During his nearly 55 years here and after much hard work, he became a man of considerable holdings. He loved nature and it was his long-standing wish to preserve his land in its undeveloped, natural beauty.
While Mr. Sanders tended to be a somewhat gruff individual, those who really knew him saw that he was vulnerable and in need of caring.
For 12 years, prior to the four months before Mr. Sander's death, four families ministered to his many daily physical and spiritual needs and provided the care he needed. Many thanks to those families who, unselfishly, gave of their time and love during those many years.
      May God richly bless you.

TRAVERSE CITY - Rhea M. Smith, a resident of Traverse City, died quietly of congestive heart failure on Saturday. She was 89.
During her long life, Rhea was a mother, wife, breadwinner, homemaker and grandmother. She loved to sew, knit, entertain visitors in her home, camp all over Michigan, and - as her agility declined - to read novels and chat with neighbors Janet, Barb and Deb on Amy Street. She greeted visitors with a big smile and was interested in whatever they wanted to share with her.
She was born July 20, 1909, in Flint, the youngest of five children of Mary (Johnson) and Frank Ross. As a child, she lived in a lumber camp in northern Michigan where her mother was a cook and her father the foreman for a crew of "shanty boys."       During the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, she hitchhiked to California with her young daughter. En route she carried a heavy flat iron on her lap as a message that gentlemanly behavior by drivers would be both appreciated and enforced.
During World War II she operated a production machine at Buick Motor Division, making parts for military airplane engines. Later she managed the needle-crafts section at Smith-Bridgemans department store and a Ben Franklin store on Flint's east side.
In 1947 she married W.H. "Herb" Smith who was her lifelong companion until his death in 1997. With him she built a life of 50 years - working, camping, fishing, hunting, vegetable gardening, square dancing and entertaining children and grandchildren. They first made their home in Flint, then in Davison, Pleasant Lake (near Lapeer) and Hale (near Tawas). In 1993, with health declining, they moved to Traverse City.
